Day 2
Your guide and driver will meet you today for a morning tour of the most important parts of the city. Your tour will focus mainly on the impressive historical sights of the central colonial part of the city, such as the cathedral, Aliaga's house, and Larco Museum. Afternoon at leisure.
Day 3
Transfer to the airport today for your short flight to colonial Arequipa. This elegant city with a striking volcanic backdrop is also known as the White City, due to the colour of the stone used in the construction of its historic centre.
Day 4
You will meet your private guide for a tour of Arequipa. Most areas of interest are within walking distance, and highlights include the beautiful Santa Catalina convent.
Day 5
Free day to further explore Arequipa, people watch in one of the balcony cafes overlooking the main square, try one of the many fine restaurants here, and perhaps take a relaxing spa treatment at your hotel. At sunset, you will board the luxury Belmond Andean Explorer train for your journey across the Altiplano to Puno
Day 6
You will awaken on board the train today for sunrise at Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world. After breakfast on board, you will explore the curious floating reed islands of Uros, the traditional weaving communities on Taquile, and take lunch at a private lakeside location. Return to the train in time for afternoon tea and the onward journey to La Raya, the highest point on the Puno to Cusco route at 4338 metres above sea level.
Day 7
After breakfast on board the train, you will have a tour of the archaeological site of Raqchi before arriving in Cusco, the proud former capital of the Inca Empire. Transfer to your luxury accommodation in the historic centre, an area filled with pretty plazas, boutiques, and restaurants. The rest of the day is free to begin exploring and acclimatising to the altitude.
Day 8
You will meet your private guide for a half-day walking tour of the impressive city of Cusco, visiting its impressive cathedral and Coricancha, the most important temple in the Inca Empire. This is a great way to orient yourself and ensure you don’t miss the key attractions of the historic centre.
Day 9
Today, you have free time to Enjoy this intoxicating city, which is a delight to stroll around with its cobbled streets, atmospheric squares, and attractions such as the Inca Temple of the Sun. There are countless handicraft markets and museums. We also recommend making the effort to see some of the impressive Inca ruins in the surrounding hills or perhaps arrange a cookery class.
Day 10
Depart Cusco this morning for the luxurious Hiram Bingham train journey to Machu Picchu. On arrival, you will take the shuttle bus up to Machu Picchu with your guide. You will have an afternoon guided tour before returning to your hotel for the night. As the only hotel located next to Machu Picchu, a stay at Sanctuary Lodge is a chance to be the first to enter the ancient Inca citadel at dawn.
